Addition

Class 2

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

Ravi has 12 mangoes. His mother gives him 5 more. How many mangoes does he have now? We add to find the total. Addition means putting things together to find how many in all. The sign for addition is + (plus). The answer we get is called the sum.

Adding on a Number Line

A number line helps us add by jumping forward.

Example: 7 + 4 = ?
Start at 7. Jump 4 steps forward: 8, 9, 10, 11.
So 7 + 4 = 11.

Adding 1-Digit Numbers

Examples:
3 + 5 = 8    6 + 7 = 13    9 + 4 = 13

Adding 2-Digit Numbers (Vertical Method)

Write the numbers one below the other. Add the ones first, then the tens.

Example: 23 + 15
23
+ 15
38
Ones: 3 + 5 = 8. Tens: 2 + 1 = 3. Answer: 38.
Example: 34 + 22 = 56
Ones: 4 + 2 = 6. Tens: 3 + 2 = 5. Answer: 56.

Adding on a Number Line

Start at the first number. Jump forward as many times as the second number.

Example: 7 + 4. Start at 7. Jump 4 steps: 8, 9, 10, 11. So 7 + 4 = 11.
