📖 Let Us Begin!

We say "I ate an apple" and "I ate a banana." Why do we use "an" before apple but "a" before banana? And why do we say "the sun" and not "a sun"?

The small words a, an, and the are called articles. They are tiny but very important! Let us learn how to use them correctly.

What Are Articles?

Articles are small words that come before nouns. There are only three articles in English: a, an, and the.

We use articles to tell whether we are talking about something general or something specific.

When to Use "A"

We use "a" before a word that begins with a consonant sound (sounds like b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z).

Examples: a book, a cat, a dog, a mango, a pen, a school, a tree.

"I saw a bird on a branch."

When to Use "An"

We use "an" before a word that begins with a vowel sound (sounds like a, e, i, o, u).

Examples: an apple, an egg, an ice cream, an orange, an umbrella.

"She ate an orange and an egg for breakfast."

Easy trick: Say the word aloud. If it starts with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), use "an." If it starts with any other sound, use "a."

When to Use "The"

We use "the" when we are talking about a particular or specific person, place, or thing that both the speaker and listener know about.

"Please open the window." (We know which window.)

"The sun rises in the east." (There is only one sun.)

"The Ganga is a holy river." (There is only one Ganga.)

We also use "the" when there is only one of something: the moon, the sky, the earth.

Think about it: "I want a book" means any book. "I want the book" means one particular book. Can you feel the difference?
