We use sentences every day -- to tell things, to ask things, to give orders, and to show surprise. Did you know that each of these is a different type of sentence?

Each type of sentence ends with a different punctuation mark. Let us find out which mark goes where!

1. Statements (Telling Sentences)

A statement is a sentence that tells us something. It gives information. A statement always ends with a full stop (.).

Examples:

Rohan goes to school by bus.

India is a large country.

My mother makes delicious parathas.

Tip: If a sentence is simply telling you a fact or giving information, it is a statement.

2. Questions (Asking Sentences)

A question is a sentence that asks something. It needs an answer. A question always ends with a question mark (?).

Examples:

Where do you live?

Is Priya coming to the picnic?

How many states are there in India?

Tip: Questions often start with What, Where, When, Who, Why, How, Is, Are, Do, Did, Can.

3. Commands (Ordering Sentences)

A command is a sentence that gives an order or a request. It tells someone to do something. A command usually ends with a full stop (.).

Examples:

Sit down.

Please open your books to page ten.

Stand in a straight line.

Notice: Commands often do not mention "you" because it is understood. "Sit down" means "You sit down."

4. Exclamations (Surprise Sentences)

An exclamation is a sentence that shows a strong feeling like surprise, joy, fear, or excitement. It ends with an exclamation mark (!).

Examples:

What a beautiful rainbow!

How tall that building is!

What a big elephant!

Tip: Exclamations often begin with "What" or "How" and express strong feelings.
