Imagine your friend Aarav says: "I love playing cricket." You can tell someone what Aarav said in two ways:
Way 1: Aarav said, "I love playing cricket." (You use his exact words inside quotation marks.)
Way 2: Aarav said that he loved playing cricket. (You report his words in your own way, without quotation marks.)
Way 1 is called Direct Speech. Way 2 is called Indirect Speech (also called Reported Speech).
Direct speech gives the exact words spoken by a person. The spoken words are placed inside quotation marks (" ").
A comma is placed after the reporting verb (said, asked, told) and before the quotation marks.
Meera said, "I am going to the temple."
The teacher said, "Open your books to page 25."
Ravi said, "I have finished my homework."
Mother said, "Dinner is ready."
Indirect speech (reported speech) tells what a person said without using their exact words. There are no quotation marks. The word "that" is often used to connect the two parts.
Meera said that she was going to the temple.
The teacher told us to open our books to page 25.
Ravi said that he had finished his homework.
Mother said that dinner was ready.

Think about it: In direct speech, we write the speaker's words exactly as they were spoken.
Think about it: Notice how the words change when we report what someone said. "I am" becomes "she was," and "I have" becomes "he had."
