Money

Class 4

🎯 Learning Objectives

📖 Let Us Begin!

We use money every day -- to buy vegetables at the sabzi mandi, pay the auto fare, or buy books from a shop. In India, our currency is the Indian Rupee (Rs). The smaller unit is the paisa.

1 Rupee = 100 Paise. We write money using a decimal point to separate rupees and paise. For example, forty-five rupees and seventy-five paise is written as Rs 45.75.

Introduction

We use money every day -- to buy vegetables at the sabzi mandi, pay the auto fare, or buy books from a shop. In India, our currency is the Indian Rupee (Rs). The smaller unit is the paisa.

1 Rupee = 100 Paise. We write money using a decimal point to separate rupees and paise. For example, forty-five rupees and seventy-five paise is written as Rs 45.75.

Writing Money with Decimals

The number before the decimal point shows rupees. The number after the decimal point shows paise. Always write paise using two digits.

Example
Example 1: Writing Money

Twelve rupees and fifty paise = Rs 12.50

Seven rupees and five paise = Rs 7.05 (not Rs 7.5)

Two hundred rupees = Rs 200.00

Converting: Rs 8.35 = 800 paise + 35 paise = 835 paise. Similarly, 460 paise = Rs 4.60.

Adding and Subtracting Money

Line up the decimal points, then add or subtract as you would with normal numbers.

Example
Example 2: Adding Money

Aarav bought a pencil for Rs 8.50 and an eraser for Rs 5.75. What is the total?

Rs 8.50 + Rs 5.75 = Rs 14.25

Example
Example 3: Subtracting Money (Finding Change)

Meera gave Rs 500 to buy a book costing Rs 185.50. What change did she get?

Rs 500.00 - Rs 185.50 = Rs 314.50

Always write paise as two digits after the decimal. Rs 6.5 should be written as Rs 6.50.

Making a Bill

A bill is a list of items bought with their prices. We add all the amounts to find the total.

Example
Example 4: Priya's Stationery Bill
ItemQuantityPrice EachTotal
Notebook3Rs 35.00Rs 105.00
Pen2Rs 12.50Rs 25.00
Ruler1Rs 15.00Rs 15.00

Grand Total = Rs 105.00 + Rs 25.00 + Rs 15.00 = Rs 145.00
